CM Majhi proposes modern defence manufacturing unit in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Oct 6 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday proposed setting up a modern defence manufacturing unit in Odisha, asserting that the state has the industrial ecosystem and skilled manpower to emerge as a major defence manufacturing hub.
Addressing a gathering at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) manufacturing unit at Sunabeda in Koraput district during the inauguration of the second manufacturing line for Shakti engines, Majhi said the Odisha government was committed to developing the state as a major industrial and defence hub of the country.
He said the rapid expansion of sectors such as metal downstream, semiconductors and information technology in Odisha would provide a strong supporting ecosystem for defence manufacturing.
Highlighting the state's industrial growth, Majhi said Odisha had received investment proposals worth around Rs 22.5 lakh crore since the BJP-led government came to power, of which proposals worth Rs 12.5 lakh crore had already been approved.
As many as 152 industrial projects involving investments of more than Rs 3 lakh crore had already been grounded, generating around 2.50 lakh jobs, he said.
Industrial development was no longer confined to a few districts but was spreading across the state, with industries now being established in all districts, the Chief Minister said.
Majhi said the state was also focusing on developing a strong semiconductor ecosystem. The Odisha Silicon Valley was being established over 870 acres at Naraj, while projects such as SiCSEM and 3DGS were under construction and would contribute significantly to India's efforts towards self-reliance in semiconductor technology.
Referring to the achievements of the HAL Koraput Division, Majhi said the organisation had made an unparalleled contribution to strengthening the country's security over the past six decades.
He described the inauguration of the second manufacturing line for Shakti engines and the handing over of the 2,000th engine as significant milestones reflecting India's growing defence manufacturing capabilities.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh who inaugurated the second manufacturing line for Shakti engines, said the HAL facility at Koraput, along with the defence and naval ecosystem in Visakhapatnam, had the potential to create a new industrial and strategic identity for eastern India.
Singh said Odisha's strategic geographical location, long coastline, major ports, abundant mineral resources, advanced engineering capabilities, industrial infrastructure and skilled manpower had enabled the state to carve out a distinct identity in India's defence manufacturing and technology sector.
