CM Saini inaugurates 4-day Surajkund Diwali fair, pitches 'Vocal for Local' push

Surajkund, Oct 23 (UNI) Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday inaugurated the four-day Surajkund Diwali Fair, launching a spirited 'Vocal for Local' push with products from all 143 blocks of the state, even as he highlighted a rural livelihood network connecting over six lakh families through 67,641 self-help groups.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Saini said the fair, running from 23 to 26 October, was conceived as a direct marketplace for artisans, weavers and craftspeople, eliminating middlemen and giving traditional Indian products the visibility they deserve ahead of the festive season. He urged visitors to choose locally made handicrafts and indigenous goods for Diwali gifts, stressing that every such purchase strengthens local enterprises, sustains ancestral crafts and advances the vision of a self-reliant India championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Besides handicrafrs, the event also showcases folk culture and regional Cuisines. The Chief Minister said the One Block, One Product initiative is being vigorously promoted under the PADMA scheme, with items from every one of Haryana’s 143 development blocks identified and now being showcased to a wider audience through platforms like the Surajkund fair. He described the event as more than a cultural carnival; it is a commercial bridge between rural producers and urban consumers, designed to turn tradition into livelihood.
Highlighting the state’s rural empowerment architecture, Saini said the Haryana State Rural Livelihoods Mission has already linked over six lakh families through 67,641 self-help groups, creating a grassroots economic grid that supports women-led enterprises and micro-enterprises in villages. To further streamline operations, two online portals of the mission have been launched, bringing digital transparency and market access closer to rural producers.
The Surajkund Diwali Fair brings together traditional crafts, live folk performances and regional cuisines, offering families a festive experience rooted in India’s diverse cultural heritage while ensuring the economic benefits flow directly to artisans. Saini said honouring the hard work of craftspeople was integral to realising the vision of a self-reliant India, and fairs of this nature were essential to prevent traditional skills from fading into obscurity
