Cong faces guaranteed defeats ahead: Chalavadi

Hassan, Nov 6 (UNI) Stepping up the BJP's offensive against the Congress government in Karnataka, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy on Friday declared that electoral defeats were now "guaranteed" for the ruling party, accusing it of betraying voters through unfulfilled promises, rising prices and what he termed 'guarantee theft'.
Launching a blistering attack after offering prayers at the Hasanamba temple here, Narayanaswamy also targeted State Minister Priyank Kharge over his reported description of union Minister and former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy as a 'village fool', saying the Home Minister's arrogance would eventually invite a public backlash.
Invoking the Kannada proverb 'a little knowledge makes one arrogant', the BJP leader said Priyank should understand that India's strength lay in its villages and that a person's worth could not be measured by educational qualifications or social background.
"India is a country of villages. If there are villages, there is Delhi. Many of those governing the country have come from villages. How can they all be called fools?" he asked.
In a pointed personal attack, Narayanaswamy alleged that Priyank had damaged the political reputation and public standing of his father, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, through his statements and conduct. He advised the minister to exercise restraint, saying it would be in his own political interest.
Turning the spotlight on governance, Narayanaswamy accused the Congress government of failing to translate its election manifesto into reality and misleading people with its five guarantee schemes.
Alleging that the recent milk price hike had not adequately benefited farmers, he said the government was collecting more from consumers without ensuring that the additional revenue reached milk producers.
He also attacked the government's free bus travel scheme for women, arguing that the higher fares imposed on men effectively shifted the financial burden onto husbands while offering free travel to their wives.
"The government is taking money from the husband's pocket and putting it into the wife's vanity bag. Is this what it was supposed to do?" he asked.
In his sharpest political attack, he coined the expression 'guarantee theft' to counter the Congress's allegations of 'vote theft'.
He alleged that the Indira Canteens had disappeared, Gruha Lakshmi payments were pending for five months and Yuva Nidhi had failed to reach beneficiaries as promised. He also accused the state government of taking credit for rice supplied by the Centre.
"The issue is not vote theft; it is guarantee theft," he said.
Questioning the Congress' criticism of Electronic Voting Machines, Narayanaswamy said the party had suffered embarrassment even in recent elections conducted through ballot papers.
Claiming that the Congress had lost public confidence, he asserted that the party would face further electoral setbacks. He also ruled out any possibility of political adjustment or understanding involving his party.
