Cong must back Veerashaivas with Council berth: Basavaraj Shivaganga

Bengaluru, June 23 (UNI) Channagiri MLA Basavaraj Shivaganga on Monday emphasized the need to allocate one of the vacant Legislative Council seats to the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, citing their recent political support to the ruling party.
Speaking to media, Shivaganga noted that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's ongoing visit to Delhi is expected to include meetings with senior Congress leaders to discuss the political scenario in the state, particularly the nominations to the four vacant seats in the Karnataka legislative council.
"The Chief Minister, being our leader, must consult the high command. But it’s not just about filling four seats — we must assess which communities stood with us in the last election and which ones we must engage ahead of the next," Shivaganga said.
He argued that giving one council seat to the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community would strengthen the Congress party. "They have supported us recently, stood by us. If we engage them further, our party will only grow stronger," he added.
Responding to the ongoing discussion within the party regarding nominations, including demands from the Muslim minority community, Shivaganga said the final decision rests with the high command. However, he reiterated the need to prioritize representation based on recent electoral support.
"I belong to the Veerashaiva community. In the last election, we saw significant support from our community, which earlier had drifted. If we wish to retain that support, we must give due importance and representation," he stated.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to stay in Delhi for three days and meet party leadership to finalize the nominations.
