Tiger Shroff firing: Maha Congress dares Fadnavis to bring Bishnoi to Mumbai for questioning

Buldhana/Mumbai, Oct 19 (UNI): Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal today questioned the state government's handling of organised crime and challenged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to secure the transfer of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi to Mumbai for interrogation into a series of attacks allegedly linked to his gang.
In a statement, Sapkal said the firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff had once again raised serious concerns over law and order in Maharashtra.
Two armed men allegedly opened fire in Mumbai's Juhu area on Sunday evening. The Bishnoi gang subsequently claimed responsibility in an unverified social media post. Shroff escaped unhurt, while his driver and another person sustained injuries.
Questioning the alleged links between the gang and the ruling BJP, Sapkal claimed that such criminal activities could not continue from a jail in Ahmedabad without the government's backing.
He said Fadnavis should move beyond verbal assurances and take concrete action by bringing Bishnoi to Mumbai for questioning and initiating appropriate legal proceedings against him.
The Congress leader referred to the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique and earlier firing incidents targeting the residences of actor Salman Khan and filmmaker Rohit Shetty, alleging that the Bishnoi gang's involvement had emerged in these cases as well.
“Why has this mafia member not been interrogated so far? Who has tied the hands of the Maharashtra Police?” Sapkal asked.
Referring to an August 2023 union Home Ministry order issued under Section 268 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), he claimed that the restriction prevented Bishnoi from being taken outside Gujarat for questioning.
He urged the Maharashtra government to approach the Centre immediately to have the restriction withdrawn.
Sapkal also questioned the delay in interrogating Bishnoi, arguing that police personnel frequently cross state boundaries to apprehend Opposition leaders and legislators.
Accusing Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, of failing to control organised crime, Sapkal alleged that gangsters and criminal networks were operating with increasing confidence in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Nagpur.
He said the Mumbai Police, once known for its reputation and deterrent authority, had lost its standing, alleging that the force was being deployed primarily against Opposition leaders and students while criminals continued their activities.
Describing Fadnavis as an ineffective H ome minister, Sapkal further alleged that the police machinery was being used to target non-BJP political figures.
He cited what he described as increased scrutiny of former Congress MLA Rahul Bondre from Buldhana district.
The Congress leader alleged that the BJP-led government lacked the resolve to act against gangsters and drug and sand mafias and demanded its resignation.
