CPI(M) chief MA Baby accuses Delhi Police of targeting protesters, demands Gyanesh Kumar’s removal

New Delhi, Oct 4 (UNI) CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby has accused the Delhi Police of using excessive force against protesters and alleged that the authorities were attempting to intimidate women protesters and journalists amid the ongoing opposition campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In a post on social media platform X, Baby alleged that the Delhi Police had “unleashed violence” against protesters over the past couple of days, claiming that some personnel were deployed without name tags and that citizens were taken away in unmarked vehicles.
“The impunity with which the Delhi Police has unleashed violence against protesters over the last couple of days, with police personnel without name tags using brutal force and citizens being taken away in unmarked cars, shows the callous disregard of the ruling dispensation and Home Minister Amit Shah for the rule of law in the nation’s capital,” he said.
Baby also raised allegations concerning the police handling of a complaint by a woman journalist who has accused a police official of sexual assault. He alleged that the refusal to register an FIR showed that sexual assault was being used as a means to target and intimidate women protesters and journalists covering demonstrations.
“The refusal to file a FIR against a police official accused of sexually assaulting a woman journalist reveals that sexual assault is being used as a tool to target and intimidate women protesters and journalists covering their protests,” Baby alleged.
He linked the issue to the opposition campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the actions were aimed at protecting the Chief Election Commissioner.
Baby accused Kumar of undermining democratic institutions, describing the Election Commission under his leadership in highly critical terms.
“All this is being done to protect Gyanesh Kumar, who as Chief Election Commissioner has turned the Election Commission into a slaughterhouse of democracy,” he said.
Baby also directly targeted union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Delhi Police, saying the protests would continue despite what he described as attempts to suppress them.
“Amit Shah and Delhi Police should read the writing on the wall — the people have spoken, Gyanesh Kumar must go,” he said, adding that “violence and thuggery will not deter the protesters who are fighting to save our democracy.”
Baby’s remarks come amid escalating opposition protests over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and demands for greater transparency in the revision of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties, including the Congress and Left parties, have accused the Election Commission of excluding large numbers of voters and have demanded the restoration of eligible names, while the Election Commission has maintained that the revision is aimed at ensuring the integrity and accuracy of electoral rolls.
