CPI(M) Condemns Delhi Police Crackdown on SFI-DYFI Protest, Demands Gyanesh Kumar’s Removal

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Friday condemned the Delhi Police action against an SFI-DYFI protest in the national capital, alleging that the use of force against students and youth would not silence demands for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and changes in the functioning of the Election Commission.
In a post on social media platform X, Baby said he “strongly condemns the Delhi Police crackdown” on the protest, which was organised to demand the immediate removal of Kumar, revocation of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reforms to the Election Commission.
“Modi and Amit Shah are mistaken if they think the brutal use of force against peaceful students and youth, and the dragging of people’s representatives through the streets, will silence democratic protests,” Baby said.
He also alleged that the Election Commission’s credibility had been undermined and reiterated his demand for Kumar’s removal from office. “Gyanesh Kumar must be removed from office for undermining the credibility of the Election Commission,” he said, adding that “cracking down on protests and suppressing dissent will not save him.”
The CPI(M) leader’s remarks came amid intensifying opposition criticism of the Election Commission over the SIR exercise and demands for greater transparency in the revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have alleged that the revision process could lead to the exclusion of genuine voters, while the Election Commission has maintained that electoral-roll revision is aimed at ensuring that the rolls remain accurate and that eligible citizens are able to participate in elections.
The SIR exercise and the functioning of the Election Commission have emerged as major points of confrontation between the opposition and the poll panel, with opposition parties stepping up protests and political campaigns against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Baby’s remarks added to the criticism of the Delhi Police action and called for the protests against the Election Commission to be treated as part of democratic dissent rather than suppressed through force. UNI SKA CDS
