Crackdown on MPSC: Maha CM recommends judicial probe against Commission members

Mumbai, Oct 5 (UNI) In a major breakthrough for protesting civil service aspirants, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today recommended that Governor Jishnu Dev Varma establish a special inquiry committee to initiate action against former and current members of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) under Article 317 of the Constitution.
The development follows weeks of intense statewide student agitations—spearheaded notably by aspirants and opposition leaders in Pune—over persistent irregularities, administrative mismanagement, and examination controversies. The proposed special committee will function under the chairmanship of a retired High Court judge.
The Chief Minister has requested that the panel submit its comprehensive report within three months, paving the way for further strict legal and administrative action based on its findings.
Addressing protesters earlier, CM Fadnavis noted that direct removal from constitutional posts is governed strictly by the framework laid out under Article 317 of the Constitution, necessitating a formal judicial inquiry process.
The state government's proactive step comes amid heavy political crossfire. Beyond the massive street protests led by opposition figures like NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MLA Rohit Pawar, the administration faced unexpected heat from within its own ranks. Ruling party MLA Sanjay Gaikwad publicly censured the board, demanding its complete dissolution over severe operational discrepancies.
With the recommendation submitted to the Raj Bhavan, the crisis surrounding the state's premier recruitment body has reached a critical juncture, promising sweeping accountability measures for the state's competitive examination framework.
