Maha: Congress files case against policemen who raided party head office in Mumbai

Mumbai, Oct 5 (UNI) The Maharashtra Congress filed a police complaint against policemen here today for illegally entering its Tilak Bhavan party office and picking up tribal students as well as National Students union of India (NSUI) leaders, at the Dadar West police station.
After talking to tribal students in Tilak Bhavan, a delegation of Congress leaders, led by former minister Naseem Khan, a member of the Congress Working Committee, went to Dadar Police Station and filed a complaint.
They demanded that a case be registered against the police who illegally entered Tilak Bhavan office and arrested the tribal students for no rhyme or reason.
Maharashtra Congress Vice President Advocate Ganesh Patil, Maharashtra State Congress Legal Cell Chief Advocate Ravi Prakash Jadhav, Maharashtra Congress General Secretary Advocate Sandesh Kondwilkar, Mumbai Youth Congress President Zeenat Shabrin, Maharashtra NSUI President Sagar Salunkhe, Mumbai NSUI President Praduuman Yadav, State Congress General Secretaries Brij Dutt, Anant Mohod, Shrirang Barge, Training Department Head Ashutosh Shirke along with state office-bearers and activists were present at the police station.
Speaking to newsmen later at Tilak Bhavan, former minister Naseem Khan further said that tribal students had come to Mumbai from Nashik for the past few days after a long march.
The students had sought permission to protest at Azad Maidan but the police suddenly cancelled it.
After that, these students contacted Congress leaders and arrangements were made for their accommodation in Tilak Bhavan.
To suppress the students' protest which was going on in a democratic manner, the Mumbai police came to Tilak Bhavan and arrested them, Khan said.
Along with the students, NSUI state president Sagar Salunkhe, Pradyuman Yadav, office staff and students were detained and taken to police stations.
The police also detained 15-16-year-old female students and misbehaved with them and tortured them. Some girls fell unconscious due to the police action, the Congress leader alleged.
The Congress leader pointed that the Supreme Court has stated that the Constitution has given everyone the right to protest through democratic means to seek justice.
The Bombay High Court has fixed Azad Maidan as the venue for the protest, but the police are not giving permission, he stated.
A month ago, the tribal students had met the Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Nashik and expressed their problems and grievances, the Congress leader said.
“The Congress party stands firmly behind these students. We will support their struggle until these students get justice,” Khan added.
