Pune lab launches HPV self-sampling kit for cervical cancer screening

Pune, Oct 5 (UNI) Pune-based GreenArray Labs has launched CerviSense, a vaginal self-sampling kit aimed at making cervical cancer screening more accessible to women.
The kit allows women to collect samples themselves without a speculum for examination.
The samples are subsequently tested in laboratories for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), which is associated with most cervical cancer cases.
A study published in Frontiers in Medical Technology in September 2025, comparing 203 self-collected and clinician-collected samples, reported 98 per cent sensitivity and 99.4 per cent specificity for HPV detection using the self-sampling method, said the release.
A five-year multicentre study involving 12,373 samples from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha and Itanagar found high-risk HPV infection in 2.6 per cent of samples.
About 63 per cent of positive cases were among women aged 31-50 years. HPV-16 was the most commonly detected genotype, followed by HPV-31, HPV-33 and HPV-18.
The study also reported regional variations, with high-risk HPV prevalence of 2.4 per cent in Maharashtra, 3.6 per cent in Karnataka, 3.1 per cent in Odisha and 6.5 per cent in Itanagar. UNI SP SAS
