Cyclone Arnab intensifies, likely to cross Andhra coast on October 28

Kolkata, Oct 26 (UNI) The deep depression over the east-central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm early Sunday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said.
The system is currently around 590 km from Sri Vijaya Puram in the Andaman Islands.
The approaching cyclone, named ‘Arnab’ by Bangladesh, moved relatively slowly yesterday at a speed of 5 kmph. However, over the past few hours, it gained momentum and moved at an increased speed of 15 kmph, drawing closer to land. The system is expected to move west-north-westwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by midnight today.
By the morning of October 27, the system is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm over the same region. Gathering moisture, the system is then predicted to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam as a very severe cyclonic storm, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 115–125 kmph and gusts reaching 140 kmph, by the forenoon of October 28, according to the RMC forecast.
As the anticipated track of the developing cyclone has a sharp curvature, it is expected to bring rainfall of varying intensity, from heavy to moderate and light, to several states along its trajectory. From the Andaman Islands, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, several states are likely to receive rainfall between October 27 and 30.
According to a bulletin issued by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services under the union Ministry of Earth Sciences, Andhra Pradesh is expected to bear the brunt of Cyclone Arnab. Odisha and the Andaman Islands are also likely to receive rainfall under the cyclone's influence. While Gangetic West Bengal is still expected to experience light to moderate rainfall at many places, with heavy rainfall at isolated places in the coastal districts on October 28 and 29, North Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive light rainfall on October 29 and 30.
