Darjeeling Himalayan Railway earns global spotlight in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2027 list

Siliguri, Sep 24 (UNI) Darjeeling has once again received international recognition, with the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), popularly known as the Darjeeling Toy Train, being featured by global travel guide publisher Lonely Planet in its Best in Travel 2027 list.
Lonely Planet has included Darjeeling, India, among its 50 destinations and experiences selected for travellers planning their journeys in 2027. Darjeeling has been specifically highlighted as "Best for a Toy Train journey", with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway described as an experience in which the journey itself is the main attraction.
The publication noted that visitors to Darjeeling willingly undertake a train journey covering only around 14 km over approximately two hours, underscoring the unique appeal of the heritage railway. Lonely Planet described the DHR as a railway where "the journey is the whole point."
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was constructed as a narrow-gauge railway linking the plains with the hill town of Darjeeling. According to Lonely Planet, work on the ambitious railway began in 1879, connecting Siliguri, situated at around 152 metres above sea level, with Darjeeling at approximately 2,100 metres.
The publication also highlighted the continuing operation of historic steam locomotives on the Darjeeling-Ghum sector, while diesel locomotives operate on the longer route from the plains.
The recognition places Darjeeling and its iconic Toy Train once again in the international tourism spotlight. The DHR is also a UNESCO World Heritage railway, adding to its historical and cultural significance as one of the most distinctive mountain railways in the world.
