Deep depression lashes Kolkata with heavy rain, several areas waterlogged

Kolkata, Sep 24 (UNI) The deep depression that crossed the eastern coast near Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh brought heavy rain to Kolkata and its adjoining districts on Thursday, leaving several pockets of the city waterlogged.
From Sector V, Minto Park and AJC Bose Road to Park Circus, incessant rainfall inundated several parts of the city.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata recorded more than 74 mm of rainfall in 24 hours till 5.30 pm on Thursday. The IMD has also issued a very heavy rainfall warning for Gangetic West Bengal for September 24 and a heavy rainfall warning for September 25.
A closer look at data from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation revealed several pockets of the city receiving more than 70 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 4 pm.
According to an official source, the highest rainfall was recorded in Jodhpur Park, which received 115 mm of rainfall, falling under the 'very heavy' rain category of the Met Department.
Topsia recorded 105 mm of rainfall in two spells during the period. Pagladanga, Thanthania and Palmer Bazar registered rainfall close to 100 mm, receiving 98 mm and 95 mm, respectively.
Other pockets that were pounded by heavy rain included Maniktala with 77 mm, Belgachia 72 mm, Marcus Street 74 mm, Ballygunge 89 mm and Kalighat 79 mm.
Alerting citizens about the anticipated rainfall, the RMC at 11 am issued an advisory for Kolkata forecasting intense spells of 20 mm to 30 mm every hour over the next 24 hours.
The weather office also predicted cumulative heavy rainfall of up to 110 mm during the next 24 hours and occasional reduction in visibility due to intense spells of rain.
The deep depression crossed the coast near Kalingapatnam between 11 pm and 1 am, triggering heavy rainfall in several districts of West Bengal, including Bankura, West Midnapore, Purulia, West Burdwan, Durgapur, East Burdwan, Asansol, South 24 Parganas and Birbhum till 8.30 am on Thursday.
According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon is also vigorous over South Bengal and active over North Bengal. This, coupled with the deep depression, is expected to bring another wet day to Kolkata and other districts of South Bengal on Friday.
However, as the system that lay in the form of a deep depression on Thursday is expected to weaken into a depression, the intensity of rainfall is anticipated to be lower.
