Delhi doctor remanded in West Bengal court in Burdwan child death case

Burdwan, Oct 7 (UNI) A Delhi-based doctor accused of practising with fake medical qualifications has been remanded in police custody in connection with the death of a four-year-old child at a Burdwan nursing home.
The prime accused in the Burdwan nursing home child death case, Sheikh Saidul Haque, a fake doctor, was finally intercepted at Delhi airport on Tuesday night. Police said he had shaved off his beard to conceal his identity, but could not evade arrest.
On production, the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Burdwan ordered seven days' police remand for the accused late this afternoon, against the police's appeal for 10 days' remand. East Burdwan SP Pushpa S told UNI, "After interrogating him, we may get several clues about the fake doctor's racket."
Haque had fled to Dubai after an inquiry following the death of a child due to inappropriate surgery revealed that his medical degrees were fake. On Tuesday evening, as soon as he returned from Dubai to Delhi, he was detained by the Delhi Airport Police on the basis of a 'lookout notice', and the Burdwan Police Station was informed accordingly. A team of Burdwan Police brought him to Burdwan by air last midnight.
The case relates to the death of four-year-old Aranya Roy of West Midnapore during surgery at a nursing home last month. The bereaved family had lodged a complaint of medical negligence causing death at Burdwan PS against the nursing home authorities and Saidul Haque. Complaints were also filed with the Health Department and the West Bengal Medical Council.
During investigations, the State Medical Council found all the medical certificates of Saidul Haque to be forged. It emerged that he had procured fake certificates from Bihar against a hefty amount and got himself registered with the West Bengal Medical Council. After the Bihar Medical Council confirmed that the certificates were fake, the state Council also lodged a separate police complaint against him.
According to police sources, Haque started his career as a ward boy in Bangalore in 2008, then worked as an 'OT assistant' in Delhi in 2010-11 before starting surgical practice through backdoor means. After working for some time in Noida, he returned to Kolkata in 2013 and started arranging documents to practise as a doctor. In exchange for money, he obtained a fake MBBS certificate from Bihar and, using it, got registration from the West Bengal Medical Council. It is alleged that he was associated with as many as 26 nursing homes in Burdwan and used to perform several critical surgeries every day.
Reacting to the arrest, MoS for Industry and Burdwan Dakshin MLA Moumita Biswas Mishra said today: "From the day the innocent child died, the administration has been cooperating. I had said that day itself that he must get exemplary punishment. We will not tolerate such negligence by any doctor. The four-year-old had a minor operation. He went to the OT while eating chocolate and playing with a ball, and his family got his lifeless body. Such a tragic incident cannot be taken lightly. From that day, I, the Health Minister, Health Department and administration were with the family."
"Later it was found he is not even a doctor. Now we have to start identifying who are fake. In the last 15 years, fake doctors, engineers, teachers, police have been created. That is why such tragic incidents are happening. We seek maximum punishment from the judiciary. The administration is strict and action will be taken as per law," Biswas Mishra said, adding a warning to fake practitioners and mushrooming nursing homes: "Surrender yourselves. Otherwise you will be caught and jailed like this. No leniency will be shown." UNI KS NST
