Delhi records ‘poor’ air at AQI 230; Manesar worst in NCR bulletin

Panchkula, Oct 23 (UNI) Delhi recorded “poor” air quality with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 230 on Friday, joining 13 other cities and towns across the National Capital Region in the same category, while Manesar registered the bulletin’s highest reading at 289.
The national capital’s AQI was higher than those of neighbouring Gurugram at 215 and Noida at 205. Greater Noida, however, recorded a substantially higher reading of 284, second only to Manesar among the 24 locations listed.
The bulletin covers air quality averaged over the preceding 24 hours up to 4 pm on October 23. Fourteen locations were classified as “poor”, nine as “moderate” and only one—Palwal, at 82—as “satisfactory”. None recorded “good” air quality.
For Delhi and other locations in the “poor” category, the bulletin’s health-impact guidance identifies the possibility of “breathing discomfort to most people on prolonged exposure”.
PM2.5 was listed as Delhi’s prominent pollutant. It was also prominent in Manesar, Gurugram, Meerut, Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar, while PM10 was the prominent pollutant in Greater Noida.
After Manesar and Greater Noida, the highest readings were recorded in Meerut at 274, Baghpat at 269 and Muzaffarnagar at 262. Ghaziabad and Bhiwadi each registered 241, also above Delhi’s reading.
Other locations reporting “poor” air included Khora at 219, Bharatpur at 211, Baraut at 205 and Karnal at 203.
Uttar Pradesh accounted for eight of the 14 “poor” entries, followed by three in Haryana, two in Rajasthan and one for Delhi.
Within Haryana, Sonipat recorded a “moderate” AQI of 197, Charkhi Dadri 146, Rohtak 135, Bhiwani 130 and Faridabad 111. Bulandshahr, Khurja, Hapur and Alwar were also in the “moderate” category.
The bulletin notes that even “moderate” air quality can cause breathing discomfort among people with asthma and other lung or heart conditions.
The readings represent city and town averages. Where a city has multiple monitoring locations, their average is used to indicate its AQI.
