Delhi’s air quality deteriorates further, 14 monitoring stations record severe pollution

New Delhi, Nov 4 (UNI) Delhi’s air pollution worsened on Wednesday despite the enforcement of Stage-II restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), with the city’s air quality remaining in the ‘Very Poor’ category and several monitoring stations reporting ‘Severe’ pollution levels.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 379 at 6 am, up from 350 at 4 pm on Tuesday, indicating a further deterioration in air quality overnight. According to station-wise readings, 14 of the 25 monitoring stations recorded severe pollution, while 10 remained in the very poor category. Anand Vihar was the only station to report an AQI in the ‘Poor’ category, at 297.
Mandir Marg registered the highest AQI at 508, followed by Jahangirpuri and Punjabi Bagh at 447 each. Rohini recorded 433, Vivek Vihar 428, Alipur 419, Narela 418, Sonia Vihar and RK Puram 417 each, while ITO recorded 414. Patparganj registered 410, followed by Bawana and Sirifort at 408 each and Okhla Phase-II at 405.
Other stations reporting very poor air quality included JLN Stadium (400), Dwarka (395), Pusa (389), Najafgarh (373), Wazirpur (363), Shadipur (346), Ashok Vihar (342), Nehru Nagar (328), Sri Aurobindo Marg (307) and Dilshad Garden (303).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported shallow fog at a few places during the morning hours. The minimum temperature at Safdarjung, Delhi's principal weather station, settled at 16.1 degrees Celsius, 0.8 degrees above the seasonal average. Palam recorded 16.9 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road registered 16.1 degrees Celsius. The Ridge and Ayanagar stations recorded minimum temperatures of 16.4 and 16.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The IMD has forecast mainly clear skies across Delhi-NCR over the next five days, with shallow fog or mist likely during morning hours from November 6 onwards. There is no significant change expected in maximum temperatures over the next seven days. Westerly winds with speeds of 10-20 kmph prevailed over the city during the preceding 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has constituted two committees comprising eight officials to ensure that 200 truck-mounted anti-smog guns proposed for deployment across the capital meet prescribed standards before being pressed into service.
Officials said the committees would physically inspect the vehicles and assess the operational condition of the equipment, besides verifying compliance with the specifications and conditions laid down in the tender. No anti-smog gun vehicle will be permitted to operate or be deployed without fitness certification from the designated committees.
The machines are intended to be deployed at construction sites and other identified pollution hotspots to tackle dust emissions as part of the government's winter pollution-control measures. The inspections follow directions issued by the Rekha Gupta government to strengthen dust-mitigation efforts across the capital.
