Over 20,000 BJP workers join East Delhi padyatra; Meghwal, Malhotra target Congress over ‘anarchy’

New Delhi, Nov 4 (UNI) More than 20,000 BJP workers took part in a massive ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ padyatra in East Delhi on Wednesday, with senior party leaders accusing the Congress and other Opposition parties of undermining constitutional institutions and attempting to create political instability.
The march, which began near Karkardooma Mor and proceeded along Vikas Marg towards Nirman Vihar, was led by union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra. The scale of the mobilisation was such that while the leading contingent had reached Nirman Vihar, the tail of the procession was still at Karkardooma Mor.
Delhi BJP in-charge Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and Delhi Government Minister Kapil Mishra also addressed the gathering, with participants raising slogans in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BJP workers distributed pamphlets accusing the Congress and other Opposition parties of spreading anarchy under the guise of protests against constitutional institutions.
Addressing the gathering, Meghwal alleged that the Congress had failed to produce any evidence to substantiate its allegations against the Election Commission and was instead resorting to demonstrations and pressure tactics to discredit constitutional bodies.
“If the Opposition has any objections to the functioning of the Election Commission, it should follow democratic and constitutional procedures. The Congress's sole objective is to create an atmosphere of anarchy by putting pressure on constitutional institutions,” he said.
He cited the Opposition's earlier march to Rashtrapati Bhavan and its meeting with the President, claiming that its leaders had failed to furnish concrete evidence when asked to substantiate their allegations against the poll panel.
Meghwal also accused the Congress of attempting to bring the judiciary into political controversies, referring to the Supreme Court's position on the issue. He said democratic dissent was legitimate, but attempts to exert pressure on constitutional institutions could not be justified.
Reacting to alleged objectionable remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge against Modi and his late father at a party workers' convention in Patna, Meghwal said such comments reflected the Congress's petty political mindset.
“Political differences are one thing, but making indecent remarks about someone's family and deceased relatives goes against the democratic and political culture of India,” he said.
Malhotra, who is also a union Minister of State, challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to raise issues in Parliament rather than take political battles to the streets.
“If Rahul Gandhi wants a debate, he should come to Parliament. The Modi government is ready to discuss every question raised by the Opposition,” he said, adding that the government was prepared to debate issues ranging from corruption during the UPA regime to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence and the registration of FIRs.
He alleged that the Congress was opposing the Election Commission's action on electoral rolls because it feared losing what he described as its vote bank of infiltrators.
Questioning the Congress's allegations of electoral malpractice, Malhotra pointed out that the Electronic Voting Machine system had been introduced during the Congress-led UPA government's tenure. He accused the party of accepting EVMs when it won elections but questioning their credibility after electoral defeats.
“Congress and Rahul Gandhi have become synonymous with anarchy. Instead of misleading the public, they should introspect on their political relevance,” he said.
Malhotra also questioned whether electoral irregularities could explain the Congress's prolonged absence from power in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
Sahasrabuddhe said the BJP's decision to organise street-level mobilisation despite being in power was driven by the need to counter what he termed attempts to create an atmosphere of anarchy in the country.
“Congress's only agenda has always been to protect its vote bank, and the country has suffered for years because of this politics,” he said.
Defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he described it as a legal and constitutional exercise necessary to ensure the accuracy and transparency of voter lists.
“SIR is a legal and constitutional process essential for safeguarding democracy and maintaining the integrity of electoral rolls. Only eligible Indian citizens should have their names on the country's electoral rolls,” he said.
He further accused the Congress of opposing the exercise for political considerations and said decisions concerning the country should be taken through parliamentary and constitutional mechanisms rather than street protests.
