Delhi‘s historic Netaji Subhash Marg to get makeover, city’s historic identity to be highlighted: CM

New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) The Delhi government is preparing a comprehensive plan to redevelop Netaji Subhash Marg, one of the national capital’s key historic and busiest roads, with a focus on highlighting the city’s rich heritage and historic identity.
The project, being undertaken by the Indraprastha Virasat Punarvikas Nigam (IVPN), aims to transform the approximately 3.3-km stretch from Delhi Gate to Kashmere Gate into a more organised, attractive, safe and convenient corridor.
Along with improving the road’s overall appearance, the plan places special emphasis on connecting historic monuments, parks and public spaces in the surrounding areas.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government aims to develop the stretch not merely as a transport route but as a vibrant link connecting Delhi’s history, heritage, architecture, culture and modern urban life.
The proposed beautification of the corridor will be divided into three sections, extending from Kashmere Gate to Delhi Gate.
Based on the available road width, the redevelopment work will be undertaken in three phases. The first section will cover the stretch from Kashmere Gate to GPO Chowk, which is notably the busiest part of the entire corridor, with the road width ranging from 12 metres to 24 metres.
The second section will cover the stretch from GPO Chowk to Brij Mohan Chowk, the intersection leading towards Jama Masjid, and has an average width of 45 metres.
The third section will extend from Brij Mohan Chowk to the Delhi Gate intersection, with an average width ranging from 16.8 metres to 26 metres.
Taking into account the width and other available features of each section, the plan provides adequate space for vehicular traffic, pedestrians and non-motorised transport.
The proposed facilities include footpaths, dedicated bus lanes, motor vehicle lanes, parking spaces, pedestrian plazas and cycle tracks.
Modern public toilets will also be constructed on both sides of the road, while existing bus stops will be upgraded.
These facilities will be developed in accordance with the design guidelines issued by the Public Works Department (PWD) for its existing streetscape project.
A key feature of the project is the integrated development of historic, cultural and public spaces located around Netaji Subhash Marg. The plan includes prominent landmarks such as the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, St James’ Church, the Kashmere Gate area, the Chandni Chowk intersection connected to the Red Fort, Subhash Park, Hindi Park, IGT University, Agrasen Park and Sunehri Masjid.
The project will also integrate prominent locations and green spaces, including Agrasen Park, Lothian Cemetery, Old Railway Station Chowk, the Red Fort Green Pocket, the Dussehra Mela site, Chandni Chowk-Red Fort Chowk, Sunehri Masjid Bagh, Subhash Park, Brij Mohan Chowk, Delhi Gate Chowk, Ekta
