INDIA bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally draws Opposition heavyweights to Delhi; Rahul leads show of strength against ECI

New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) The national capital witnessed a massive show of Opposition strength on Sunday as leaders and supporters of the INDIA bloc converged at Ramlila Maidan for the ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ (Save the Vote, Save the Nation) Maha Rally, turning the heart of Delhi into a sea of party flags, placards and slogans against alleged electoral manipulation and demanding sweeping reforms in the election process.
The rally, preceded by a ‘Chalo Delhi’ march from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction, brought together an impressive array of Opposition leaders, including former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. CPI general secretary D Raja, CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby and CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya were also among those who joined the mobilisation.
The march began around noon, with senior leaders initially travelling together in an open bus before proceeding towards Ramlila Maidan amid cheering supporters and party workers. Thousands of demonstrators, including youth and student organisations, had assembled at different points across the capital, with many arriving from various states to participate in the show of solidarity.
The atmosphere at the rally venue was charged, with protesters raising slogans against the Election Commission and displaying placards opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Opposition accused the poll panel of facilitating large-scale deletions of voters and compromising the integrity of the electoral process. Congress workers prominently raised allegations that 99 lakh voters had been deleted from electoral rolls, demanding accountability and corrective action.
At the centre of the mobilisation was the demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whom the Opposition has accused of failing to discharge his constitutional responsibilities impartially. Rahul Gandhi, who led the march, said the public had come out to defend democracy and protect the right to vote. He had also shared links to the live proceedings through social media, seeking wider participation in the campaign.
The rally was the culmination of an increasingly confrontational campaign by the Opposition against the Election Commission over alleged ‘vote chori’ and irregularities in the SIR exercise. The INDIA bloc has maintained that the revision process risks disenfranchising legitimate voters and has demanded greater transparency, independent scrutiny and safeguards against arbitrary deletion of names.
Sunday's demonstration followed Saturday's unprecedented symbolic ‘public impeachment’ of Gyanesh Kumar at Kharge's residence at 10 Rajaji Marg. Presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, the mock Parliament unanimously adopted a six-charge resolution demanding the Chief Election Commissioner's immediate removal and his trial in a court of law over allegations of electoral manipulation.
The Opposition's decision to take its campaign from a symbolic parliamentary exercise to a mass street mobilisation underlined its determination to turn the electoral roll controversy into a nationwide political movement. While organisers projected a turnout running into several lakhs, Delhi Police estimated the initial gathering at around 50,000, deploying additional personnel and imposing traffic restrictions across central Delhi.
For the INDIA bloc, the Ramlila Maidan rally was not merely a protest against an individual constitutional functionary but an attempt to frame the battle over electoral rolls as a larger struggle over democratic rights, institutional accountability and the credibility of elections in the country.
