Delhi's Outer North records AQI of 377 as pollution grips NCR; five Haryana towns in 'very poor' category

Panchkula, Nov 4 (UNI) Air pollution remained at dangerously high levels across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Wednesday, with Delhi's Outer North recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 377, while Haryana's Bahadurgarh, Jind and Ballabgarh reported readings above 350, placing them in the 'very poor' category.
According to the NCR air quality bulletin issued at 4 p.m., Bahadurgarh recorded an AQI of 365, followed by Jind at 354 and Ballabgarh at 353. Gurugram registered 322 and Manesar 318, taking the number of Haryana locations in the 'very poor' category to five.
The figures, based on average air quality over the preceding 24 hours, showed that 13 of the 16 Haryana locations covered in the bulletin were experiencing either 'poor' or 'very poor' air quality.
Delhi's AQI reading of 377 was recorded for the Outer North district and should not be interpreted as the average for the entire national capital.
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was the predominant pollutant in most of the affected towns in Haryana, while Delhi's Outer North recorded both PM10 and PM2.5.
Panipat recorded an AQI of 295, just below the threshold for the 'very poor' category, while Bhiwani registered 280, Rohtak 249, Charkhi Dadri 245 and Dharuhera 243.
Sonipat recorded 237, Karnal 218 and Narnaul 216. All eight locations fell in the 'poor' category.
The bulletin revealed a sharp variation in pollution levels within Faridabad district. Ballabgarh recorded an AQI of 353, while Faridabad city reported 160, placing it in the 'moderate' category.
Mandikhera in Nuh district also recorded 'moderate' air quality at 171.
Palwal emerged as the least-polluted location in Haryana covered in the bulletin, with an AQI of 75, classified as 'satisfactory'.
The difference between Bahadurgarh's AQI of 365 and Palwal's 75 highlighted the wide variation in air quality across Haryana's NCR region.
Air pollution extended across neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, where Noida recorded an AQI of 330, Khora 323 and Greater Noida 309. All three locations were in the 'very poor' category.
Khurja recorded 290, Bulandshahr 274, Modinagar 272 and Baraut 271. Ghaziabad and Baghpat registered 257 each, while Muzaffarnagar reported 243, Meerut 204 and Hapur 201.
Shamli recorded comparatively better air quality, with an AQI of 127 in the 'moderate' category.
In Rajasthan's NCR districts, Bhiwadi registered 288 and Khairthal 221, both classified as 'poor'. Alwar recorded 183 and Bharatpur 164, placing them in the 'moderate' category.
The bulletin warned that prolonged exposure to 'very poor' air quality could cause respiratory illness, while 'poor' air quality could cause breathing discomfort for most people.
People with asthma, lung diseases, and heart conditions may experience breathing difficulties even when air quality is classified as 'moderate'.
PM2.5 remained the dominant pollutant across most of the affected locations. These fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and pose significant health risks.
Among the 34 locations covered across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, nine recorded 'very poor' air quality and 19 fell in the 'poor' category.
No location crossed the 'severe' AQI threshold of 401.
