Panchkula school assault victim discharged from PGIMER, family says recovery incomplete

Panchkula, Nov 4 (UNI) A six-year-old girl seriously injured in an alleged assault by an eight-year-old student at a government school in Panchkula returned home on Wednesday, after a week of treatment at PGIMER, Chandigarh, though she continues to suffer from dizziness, abdominal pain and difficulty sitting, her family said.
The girl was welcomed with flower petals by relatives and neighbours as she reached home following her discharge from the hospital.
Her father, Rashid, said her condition had improved considerably but she was yet to recover fully.
"She still finds it difficult to sit, sometimes feels dizzy and complains of stomach pain," he said.
He said the girl had stitches at three to four places on her body and visible injury marks on her face. The head injury was particularly serious, he added.
Rashid thanked the doctors and medical staff at PGIMER for treating his daughter and supporting the family during her hospitalisation.
The girl's uncle, Fazil, described her return as a moment of immense relief for the family.
"It feels as though we have got our daughter back. This is a second life for her," he said, thanking people across the country for their prayers and support.
The girl's mother called for greater accountability in schools, saying the safety of children must be a priority for teachers and school managements.
"Parents must take care of their children, but teachers and school managements must also understand their responsibility," she said.
The incident occurred on October 28 at Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School in Sector 20, where an eight-year-old Class III student allegedly attacked the kindergarten girl, leaving her seriously injured.
The assault triggered protests by parents and raised questions over supervision and safety arrangements at the school.
Following the incident, the Haryana Education Department suspended the school principal and two primary teachers. The state government also constituted a five-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.
The boy accused of attacking the girl was sent to an observation home in Ambala following proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Rashid said the family would cooperate with the government-appointed inquiry committee and wanted his daughter to resume her education once she recovered.
He said the girl aspired to become a doctor and appealed for continued prayers for her recovery.
