Dera chief Ram Rahim returns to Sunaria jail after 21-day furlough

Chandigarh, Sep 16 (UNI) Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh returned to Rohtak’s Sunaria jail on Wednesday after completing a 21-day furlough, ending his third temporary release from prison this year.
Ram Rahim left the Dera headquarters in Sirsa shortly after 2 pm in a convoy of vehicles accompanied by police personnel and headed for Sunaria jail, where he is serving sentences following his convictions in criminal cases.
His latest furlough was his 17th temporary release from prison since 2020, according to published reports. He had walked out of Sunaria jail on August 25 after being granted 21 days and travelled to the sect’s headquarters in Sirsa.
Security arrangements were put in place for Wednesday’s journey. The Dera management had not publicly disclosed the exact return schedule earlier in the day, citing security considerations.
Activity at the Sirsa headquarters had also declined ahead of his departure. The large flow of followers seen during the final days of his stay had thinned from Tuesday evening, and the main entrance was relatively quiet.
During the furlough, Ram Rahim addressed followers through online and in-person satsangs at the Sirsa Dera. The largest gatherings were reported over the weekend, when followers travelled to the headquarters by buses and private vehicles.
Before leaving, he asked followers to continue social welfare activities associated with the Dera.
The furlough period also covered events connected with his 59th birthday, observed by followers as “Avtar Diwas”. The Dera organised plantation drives and community meals at several places, according to the material provided by the sect.
Ram Rahim was convicted by a special CBI court in 2017 of raping two women disciples and is serving a 20-year prison sentence. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
The frequency of his temporary releases has drawn criticism from some political and Sikh religious figures as well as Chhatrapati’s family.
His latest furlough was the third temporary release granted to him in 2026. Published accounts say he had earlier spent 40 days outside prison in January and received another 30-day release in May, returning to Sunaria jail on June 25.
With Wednesday’s return, Ram Rahim is back at Sunaria jail after spending the 21-day furlough primarily at the Dera’s Sirsa headquarters.
