Haryanvi singer faces arms licence cancellation after daughter seen carrying revolver at university

Chandigarh, Sep 16 (UNI) Kaithal police have recommended cancellation of Haryanvi singer Karmveer Fauji’s arms licences after a video showed his daughter carrying a revolver during a visit to NIILM University, with the district administration issuing him a notice seeking an explanation.
Police have already seized two licensed weapons linked to Fauji. A .32-bore revolver and a double-barrelled gun are being examined as part of their inquiry. Investigators will also determine whether his daughter Sheetal held any licence authorising her to carry the weapon.
Deputy Commissioner Aparajita confirmed that the police had written to her office seeking cancellation of the licences. The administration has issued a notice to Fauji and will decide further action after receiving his response.
City police station Inspector Satpal Singh said the recommendation to cancel the licences had been sent to the Deputy Commissioner on the directions of senior officers.
The controversy began after a video surfaced on Tuesday showing Fauji, known for the Haryanvi song “Pani Aali Pani Pyade”, and his daughter at NIILM University in Kaithal. Sheetal was seen carrying a revolver, while a man standing near the singer was also seen with a firearm.
Fauji’s wife, Sonia Rani, is vice-chairperson of the Kaithal Zila Parishad.
After the video circulated on social media, police seized the two weapons and formed two teams to examine the matter. The inquiry found that both weapons were licensed, according to the material provided by police.
DSP Sushil Prakash said investigators were checking the circumstances in which the weapons were carried and whether Fauji’s daughter had the required authorisation.
Police have also indicated that Fauji could be questioned. Any decision on further legal action, including whether a criminal case is warranted, will depend on the findings of the investigation.
Fauji, responding to questions over the video, maintained that the weapon belonged to him and that his daughter had been standing with him.
“The licence is mine. My daughter is with me,” he said. “She is my daughter, so she put it in her pocket. She was standing right beside me.”
Fauji also said he was carrying his own gun, adding, “I am a vice-chairman. I also sing. I am carrying my gun.”
The administration has not yet cancelled the arms licences. The notice allows Fauji to explain the circumstances before a decision is taken.
Lawyer Devender Sharma said an arms licence was meant for self-defence and not for display. A licensed firearm could not ordinarily be used or carried by another person merely because its owner held a valid licence, he said.
“An arms licence is for self-defence; it is not a luxury or a means of display,” Sharma said.
He said unauthorised use of another person’s licensed firearm could invite action against the licence holder or the person carrying the weapon, depending on the circumstances established during an investigation. The licence could also face cancellation, though such a decision would have to follow the prescribed legal process.
Sharma said a licence holder must be allowed to respond before administrative cancellation. A cancellation order can also be challenged through the statutory appellate process and subsequently before the High Court.
The case comes against the backdrop of Haryana Police action against music and online content it says promotes gun, gang and violent culture.
In 2025, police identified 67 songs involving 29 singers for action and sought their removal or blocking from YouTube and other music platforms. Police had said such content could encourage gun and gang culture among young people.
