Devegowda’s praise for Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar fuels political speculation

Bengaluru, Oct 12 (UNI) JD(S) MLA GT Devegowda’s public praise of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and incumbent Chief Minister DK Shivakumar at the Mysuru Dasara inauguration has brought renewed attention to his strained relationship with the JD(S) leadership and triggered speculation over his political course ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
In a politically significant intervention, Devegowda described Siddaramaiah as the “son of Mysuru” and lauded his eight-year tenure as Chief Minister for its people-oriented programmes. In the same address, he referred to Shivakumar as the “son-in-law of Mysuru” and welcomed the continuation of welfare initiatives associated with Siddaramaiah’s government.
The simultaneous praise for the two Congress leaders is notable amid persistent speculation about Devegowda’s differences with the JD(S) leadership, particularly union Minister HD Kumaraswamy.
Devegowda has publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the party and reportedly stayed away from several of its activities. His repeated appreciation of Siddaramaiah, including at an earlier Dasara event, has drawn attention within the JD(S), especially as Kumaraswamy has been a vocal critic of the Congress government.
The latest remarks raise a larger political question: whether Devegowda will remain with the JD(S) as Karnataka’s political landscape begins to take shape ahead of the 2028 elections, or explore alternatives.
His political positioning is also being watched in the context of his son’s continued activity in the JD(S), presenting a potentially complex dynamic within the family.
However, Devegowda has not announced any decision to leave the JD(S) or join the Congress. His praise for the two Congress leaders, by itself, does not establish a change in political allegiance.
What lends the episode significance is its timing and setting: a public platform in Mysuru, in the presence of Shivakumar, where Devegowda chose to acknowledge both the former and the current Chief Minister. The remarks have once again placed his relationship with the JD(S) leadership under scrutiny as the state’s political parties look towards the next electoral contest.
