Disabled tanker MT SEAGULL 9 rescued, safely berthed at Paradip port

Bhubaneswar, Sep 28 (UNI) A disabled crude palm oil tanker carrying around 9,000 tonnes of cargo was successfully rescued and safely berthed at Paradip Port following a coordinated emergency operation involving the Paradip Port Authority (PPA), Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.
The MT SEAGULL 9, which suffered a main engine failure and developed a list of around 10 degrees due to water ingress into its ballast tanks, was safely towed into Paradip harbour by PPA's Harbour Tug Dolphin 25 and secured at NQ2 at around 4 PM on Monday.
The coordinated response ensured the safety of the vessel, crew and cargo while also preventing any threat to the marine environment.
The tanker, carrying approximately 9,000 MT of crude palm oil for Paradip Port on behalf of Adani Wilmar, was represented by M/s Atlantic Global Shipping Pvt Ltd as its shipping agent.
The vessel was located around 35 nautical miles from the Paradip Pilot Station at Latitude 20° 01.8' North and Longitude 087° 18.6' East when it reported the main engine failure. The vessel was also listing due to water ingress into its ballast tanks, while the rate of de-ballasting was insufficient to keep pace with the water ingress, prompting an immediate rescue response.
The first communication from the shipping agent was received at 0501 hours on September 27. Following the alert, the Indian Coast Guard, Directorate General of Shipping and Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) were informed.
The DGMA/DG COMMCENTRE subsequently granted permission to deploy a PPA harbour tug, with a pilot holding a Master FG Certificate on board, to assist the disabled tanker.
Harbour Tug Dolphin 25 cast off from the jetty at 1340 hours and proceeded towards MT SEAGULL 9, accompanied by Harbour Master Captain Indraneel Mukherjee.
The tug reached the vessel at 1724 hours. The towing procedure was explained to the bridge team before the tow connection was established. Towing operations commenced at 1755 hours.
The vessel subsequently entered the harbour with minimum engine assistance and was safely secured at NQ2 at around 4 PM on Monday without further incident.
The emergency response was coordinated among the Paradip Port Authority, Directorate General of Shipping, Indian Coast Guard, Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, M/s Ocean Sparkle Limited and other concerned stakeholders.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Capt A.C. Sahoo, Deputy Conservator, Paradip Port Authority. Capt S.B. Panigrahi also facilitated the necessary assistance for the safe berthing of the vessel.
Paradip Port Authority Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit congratulated the marine officers, pilots, tug crew and all other stakeholders for their timely coordination, professionalism and collective efforts in ensuring the safe arrival and berthing of MT SEAGULL 9.
He appreciated the coordinated maritime response, which ensured the safety of the vessel, crew and cargo and helped safeguard the marine environment.
