Dr Bal Chander's Blood Analysis System invention gets patent

Ashok Raina
Kangra, June 28 (UNI) Dr Bal Chander, Professor (Pathology) at R P Government Medical College, has received patents for his invention Blood Analysis System (BAS) in India and in the United States.
The European Patent Office ratified the different components and working processes, and the originality of the invention anywhere in the world.
When contacted, Dr Chander told UNI that this invention, BAS, relates to the concept and design of a new medical device which is intended for critically ill patients in ICU as well as other admitted patients, specially for those undergoing high-risk operations in the operation theaters.
He said that it was a dynamic monitoring and correction system, for detecting the levels of various critical data points and suitably calibrating the treatment, tailor made for the patient’s needs. He claimed that this invention was first in the globe.
Medical experts said the BAS by Dr Bal Chander will make it possible to measure the levels of dozens of blood molecules and ions continuously and display the results in real time. Importantly, the invention makes all this possible without the patient losing even a single drop of blood.

Dr Chander said that so far, all seriously ill patients need to have their blood samples taken repeatedly and sent to the laboratory for measuring levels of blood molecules like glucose, lactate, urea, creatinine, bilirubin etc and ions like sodium and potassium and it can take more than one hour for test results to be available, which can be a long period for seriously ill patients who need the earliest possible intervention and treatment.

He said that furthermore, test results like these are like snapshots of continuously changing blood picture. Trying to understand complex and ever-changing blood picture using these snapshots is like trying to understand the complete story of a three-hour-long movie through just a few photographs, Dr Chander explained.
He said that moreover, the BAS is also designed to correct the levels of dozens of blood molecules and ions simultaneously in a very controlled and selective manner without using any drugs.
Unlike dialysis, the invention is designed to remove any of the thousands of molecules circulating in the blood and the controlled correction can also be monitored continuously, Dr Chander disclosed.

Dr Chander said that he designed the BAS after the untimely deaths of his teacher and a classmate from Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra in Himachal Pradesh.
He said, "The motivation for the project made it possible to achieve the results without any external funding or support."
He said that besides spending lakhs of rupees on the project from his own pocket, he had to face mental tension, infuse energy in his self to achieve the patent which he ultimately got without support of any agency and the government.
He said that it took him five months for the invention and five years for getting the patent.
While the initial purpose of designing was only to measure the levels of hundreds of blood molecules and ions behind the cause of death, it culminated into a mechanism for both analysis as well as correction.

Dr Chander is an alumnus of Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra in Himachal Pradesh. He received his MBBS and MD (Pathology) degrees from AIIMS, New Delhi. He is currently a professor in the Department of Pathology at Dr R P Govt Medical College, Kangra at Tanda in Himachal Pradesh.
