ECI Extends SIR Deadlines in Delhi, Maharashtra and Four States; Final Rolls Due on November 30 in Five States

New Delhi, Oct 29 (UNI) The Election Commission of India has extended deadlines for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Nagaland, giving voters and election officials additional time to submit claims and objections, verify entries and complete the process before publication of the final electoral rolls.
In separate orders issued on Thursday, October 29, the Commission extended the deadline for filing claims and objections in Delhi to November 25 and in Maharashtra to November 13. The final electoral rolls in Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Nagaland are scheduled to be published on November 30, while Delhi's final roll will be published on December 22.
The revisions follow requests from the respective chief electoral officers and have been issued under the applicable provisions governing electoral roll revision. In Delhi and Maharashtra, the Commission invoked the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, to extend the period for filing claims and objections.
In Delhi, where the draft electoral roll was published on August 31, the deadline for filing claims and objections has been extended from October 30 to November 25. The period for issuing notices and disposing of claims and objections has also been extended to December 15 from the earlier deadline of November 30. The final electoral roll will now be published on December 22.
In Maharashtra, the deadline for filing claims and objections has been extended from October 26 to November 13, while the process of issuing notices and disposing of claims and objections will continue until November 25. The final roll is scheduled for publication on November 30.
In Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, the notice and disposal phase will continue until November 20, with the final electoral rolls due on November 30. In Telangana, the corresponding process has been extended until November 26, while in Nagaland it will continue until November 25. The final rolls in both states are also scheduled for publication on November 30.
The Commission has directed the respective state election authorities to publicise the revised schedules widely and communicate the changes in writing to political parties wherever specified in the orders. The authorities in Delhi and Maharashtra have additionally been instructed to ensure publication of the relevant notifications in their respective state gazettes.
The SIR exercise, announced in May for 19 states and union Territories, is aimed at updating electoral rolls with reference to the prescribed qualifying dates. The revision involves verification of voter details and the processing of claims and objections before the final lists are published.
The exercise has triggered a wider political controversy, with opposition parties expressing concern over the possible exclusion of eligible voters and demanding adequate safeguards to ensure that no genuine elector is deprived of the right to vote.
The revised schedules provide additional time for voters to seek the inclusion or correction of their names and for election authorities to examine objections before the rolls are finalised. UNI SKA CDS
