Spaces under Delhi’s flyovers to add to city’s beauty, police booths planned enhancing people’ safety

New Delhi, Oct 29 (UNI) The spaces beneath Delhi’s flyovers that were often neglected, are now being turned into themed public spaces, as the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD), brings major corporations on board to adopt and maintain them through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds.
Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma on Thursday paid a visit to Chirag Delhi and IIT Delhi flyovers, and reviewed work on the ground and assess the progress in this direction.
Under an MoU, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd has adopted five flyovers along the Aurobindo Marg road stretch towards Chirag Delhi, Panchsheel and IIT Delhi flyovers in the South, and Punjabi Bagh and Mukarba Chowk flyovers in the North, and the corporation is going to take care of the upkeep the sites for three years.
Instead of a one-size-fits-all makeover, the corporation studied surroundings of each site and picked a theme that goes in line with the neighborhood. For Chirag Delhi Flyover, the theme is nature and wildlife, Panchsheel Flyover- Indian Classical Dance in Modern Art, IIT Delhi Flyover- Science and Technology, Punjabi Bagh Flyover- Yogshala, Mukarba Chowk Flyover- Inter Transit Hub and for the Aurobindo Marg Road Stretch- the theme is- Lively, Multi-Hued Expression of Space.
Throwing light on the initiative, Verma said, "Since our government took office, we have partnered with major corporations and used their CSR funds to have them adopt the spaces beneath our flyovers. Every MoU we have signed carries a commitment of two to three years of maintenance. I am pleased to share that Indian Oil has taken on five flyovers.”
He said that the corporation studied the surrounding areas and are bringing in themes made for each location. “To beautify Delhi and uphold its status as the national capital, our PWD department and our government are working day and night to improve the look of our roads," Verma added.
At Chirag Delhi, one of South Delhi's busiest junctions, the space below the flyover is being turned into a green pocket built around the Nature & Wildlife theme. Wall art and installations bring the birds, animals and plant life of Delhi and India to the heart of the city, set amid landscaped greenery.
In a parallel move, to ensure public safety and security, PWD is building 400 to 500 police booths for Delhi Police, from its own funds and in coordination with the force, beneath flyovers across the city. The booths will put unused space to work for public safety and bring a visible police presence to busy junctions and corridors.
"The space under our flyovers should serve the people of Delhi," said Parvesh Verma, adding that, "PWD is building these booths with its own money and handing them over to Delhi Police. When a police booth stands at a busy junction, people feel safer and the police can respond faster.” UNI APS CDS
