ED raids former Punjab minister Sunder Sham Arora's Hoshiarpur residence

Chandigarh, Nov 2 (UNI) The Enforcement Directorate (ED), on Monday, searched the residence of former Punjab Industries Minister and senior Congress leader Sunder Sham Arora in Hoshiarpur, with central security personnel deployed outside the premises, officials and local reports said.
A team of ED officials arrived at Arora's house on Jodha Mal Road around 5 a.m. in three to four vehicles and began searching the premises. Personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) accompanied the officials during the operation.
Arora, a former legislator from Hoshiarpur, was reportedly present at his residence when the searches began.
The ED had not disclosed the case in connection with which the searches were being conducted or the nature of the documents being examined.
Arora's lawyer, H S Saini, said he had spoken to two officials who informed him that the team had come from the agency's Chandigarh office.
"They asked me to wait while their investigation is underway, and said they would grant me access once it's complete," Saini told reporters, adding that he had not been informed about the purpose of the search.
The lawyer said the officials had sought certain documents but had not provided further details about the investigation.
There was no immediate official statement from the ED regarding the searches or any possible recovery of documents, cash or other material.
Monday's action follows an extensive search at Arora's residence by the Income Tax Department in January this year. That operation lasted approximately 62 hours.
Following the January searches, Arora had told reporters that the Income Tax Department's investigation concerned his son's property business. He maintained that his family had cooperated with investigators and that nothing illegal had been found.
The former minister has previously faced investigations by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau in separate corruption-related cases.
In October 2022, the Vigilance Bureau arrested Arora over allegations that he had attempted to bribe a senior vigilance official with Rs 50 lakh to secure favourable treatment in an investigation.
The bribery allegations became a major political controversy in Punjab. Proceedings in the case were subsequently stayed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In another case registered in January 2023, the Vigilance Bureau accused Arora, an IAS officer and several government officials of irregularities involving the transfer and subdivision of an industrial plot in Mohali.
Investigators alleged that official approvals had been granted to a private real estate company in violation of prescribed procedures, causing financial losses to the state government.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed the proceedings against Arora in the industrial plot transfer case in 2024.
Arora, who served as Industries and Commerce Minister in the previous Congress government, had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2022 before returning to the Congress in 2024.
The former minister has denied wrongdoing in the earlier cases.
It was not immediately clear whether Monday's ED operation was connected to any of the previous investigations.
The central agency had not announced any arrest or disclosed the outcome of the searches in its initial public reporting.
