Education Ministry approves five Centres of Excellence for Classical Languages

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) The union Education Ministry has approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to the study of Classical languages - Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit - aimed at strengthening research, preservation and wider dissemination of India’s linguistic and literary heritage.
The Department of Higher Education has selected five higher educational institutions across the country to host the Centres, which will provide dedicated institutional support for advanced academic research, documentation, digitisation and scholarly engagement in the respective Classical Languages.
The Centres will be established at Tezpur University in Assam for Assamese, Visva-Bharati University in West Bengal for Bengali, and the Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute (Deemed to be University), Pune, for Marathi.
The Central University of Odisha will host the Centre for Pali, while the Central University of Gujarat will establish the Centre for Prakrit.
According to the Ministry, the Centres will serve as institutional platforms for advanced research and scholarship, while also supporting the preservation and digitisation of linguistic and literary resources.
A major focus will be on documenting and conserving textual heritage and making linguistic, literary and knowledge traditions associated with the Classical Languages more widely accessible.
The initiative will also strengthen regional academic ecosystems, with the five Centres spread across Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha and Gujarat.
The Ministry said the establishment of the Centres marked a significant step towards creating a stronger institutional framework for the study, research and preservation of India’s Classical Languages.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to preserve and promote the country’s linguistic and literary heritage while strengthening higher educational institutions as centres of research and scholarship.
