PM Modi hails Indian Hockey’s Asian Games double gold, calls 2026 campaign ‘Truly Special’

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated India’s men’s hockey team for retaining the Asian Games gold medal, describing the 2026 campaign as a “truly special” chapter for Indian hockey after both the men’s and women’s teams emerged champions at the same Games.
In a message posted by his office on social media platform X, Modi said, “The 2026 Asian Games have been truly special for Indian Hockey!” and congratulated the men’s team for its commanding victory in the final.
“Congratulations to our Men’s Hockey Team on retaining the Asian Games Gold with a commanding victory in the final,” the Prime Minister said, noting that the triumph marked the first time India had won back-to-back Asian Games gold medals in men’s hockey and took the country’s overall tally to five gold medals in the event.
“Back-to-back Asian Games Golds for the first time and a fifth Gold overall…it’s been an exceptional campaign by our players,” Modi said.
He also highlighted the significance of India’s double triumph in the hockey competitions, pointing out that it was the first time both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams had won gold medals at the same Asian Games.
“This triumph becomes even more special as, for the first time, both our Men’s and Women’s Hockey Teams have won Gold at the same Asian Games,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister said the twin victories demonstrated India’s strong standing in the sport across the continent. “It is clear that Indian Hockey stands tall on the Asian stage,” he said.
The men’s team’s gold adds to India’s strong record in Asian Games hockey and is also significant in the context of qualification for major international competitions, for which the continental championship can provide an important route.
The simultaneous gold-medal success of the men’s and women’s teams further underlines the breadth of India’s presence in Asian hockey.
Modi’s message came amid celebrations over India’s successful campaign at the 2026 Asian Games, with the Prime Minister describing the men’s triumph, together with the women’s gold, as a landmark moment for Indian hockey and praising the players for their performance in the tournament.
