FDA seizes adulterated food stock worth Rs 9.76 crore in Maharashtra festival drive

Mumbai, Sep 24 (UNI) The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized suspected adulterated food stock weighing 6.34 lakh kg and valued at around Rs 9.76 crore during a special statewide festival enforcement drive.
The drive was conducted from September 1 to 23 through the FDA's Festival Enforcement Portal, according to a press note issued by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.
During the drive, FDA officials inspected 3,068 food establishments across the state. Improvement notices were issued to 1,506 establishments, while licences of 248 establishments were suspended for serious violations and 12 licences were cancelled.
The FDA also filed 455 cases under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act. Of these, 398 cases were disposed of and penalties amounting to Rs 53.60 lakh were recovered.
A total of 2,423 food samples, including sweets, khoa, dairy products, edible oils and fasting foods, were collected for analysis.
Nashik division recorded the highest seizure, with 4,42,746 kg of food stock valued at Rs 6.23 crore. It was followed by Konkan division with 1,24,793 kg worth Rs 1.53 crore and Pune division with 46,266 kg worth Rs 1.52 crore.
The FDA said the enforcement drive focused on production units, mills, khoa markets, cold storages and wholesale markets to prevent unsafe food from reaching consumers while avoiding disruption to religious activities.
During Ganeshotsav, 3,198 applications were received online from Ganesh mandals across Maharashtra for Bhandara, Annachhatra and Mahaprasad. Food Safety Officers inspected 383 locations based on risk assessment and advised the organisers on hygiene, quality of raw materials and proper storage.
The FDA has issued a permanent Standing Order for enforcement during festivals and introduced the Festival Enforcement Portal for transparent and time-bound action. The portal includes an annual festival calendar covering events from Makar Sankranti to Christmas, classified into Statewide, Regional and Local levels.
