FIR filed against Guwahati restaurant for selling noodles containing beef

Guwahati, June 23 (UNI) At a time when the BJP-led government in Assam has been putting restrictions on cow slaughter and beef eating, a restaurant in Guwahati has got its name entangled in a controversy relating to the banned meat -- beef.
The incident took place on Sunday when three friends went to a Korean chain restaurant outlet located on the third floor of City Centre Shopping Mall in Guwahati. As the customers wanted to have noodles, the restaurant staff asked them to choose from a variety of packaged noodles. However, failing to understand the language in the packets, the customers asked the restaurant staff to suggest and accordingly the restaurant's staff suggested them a variety of noodles.
"However, as one of us has sea food allergy, he wanted me to check if the packet contains seafood. When I tried to Google translate the language on the packet we ordered, we were shocked to see that if contains beef and other ingredients," said Dipankar Das, one of the customers.
"When we pointed out this to the restaurant staff, none of them were aware that it contains beef. They were not interested in replying to us but moving away the packets in a hurry so that none can take a photograph or report it," said Das.
"We have filed an FIR with the Dispur police station regarding this," he said.

"There should be proper disclosure on what they are selling here. I am Hindu I do not take beef, but I had already eaten this (the noodles). The staff are also not aware of the list of ingredients. Normally people do not check this. We came to know as we checked it," said Hirak Talukdar.
It may be mentioned here that beef has kept the state on the boil for the last few days, particularly after recovery of beef and severed cow heads from some Hindu religious places in different districts of Assam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently said that the government is going to strictly enforce the provision of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 that restricts slaughter of cow and eating of beef within five km radius of temples, namghars and other religious sites.
It may be mentioned here that the Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 bans cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains and Sikhs are in majority and within a five-km radius of a temple or satra (Vaishnavite monastery).
The Assam Cattle Preservation Act of 2021 also regulates the transportation, and slaughter of all cattle, and sale of beef and beef products in the state.
However, in December last year, the Assam cabinet decided to amend the 2021 act and put a restriction on public consumption of beef also. Accordingly, sale and consumption of beef became prohibited in public places such as restaurants and hotels in Assam.
