Flávio Bolsonaro barred from leaving Brazil post-election defeat and ordered to surrender passports

Brasilia, Oct 27 (UNI) Far right Brazilian leader Flávio Bolsonaro has been barred from leaving the country and ordered to surrender his passports following his defeat in the presidential election to incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The order was issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who also oversaw the trial of Flávio’s father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged coup attempt.
Flávio disclosed the decision in a video posted on social media, saying he had returned from visiting his father, who is under house arrest in Brasília, when federal police served him with the order. He claimed the decision was based on an interview his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, gave to a US podcast on Friday, in which Eduardo urged him to leave Brazil if he lost the election.
“I never said that,” Flávio said, denying that he had expressed any intention to leave the country.
The court’s order relates to a criminal investigation into Flávio’s possible involvement in a money-laundering scheme. It prohibits him from contacting his friend Willer Tomaz, a lawyer linked to betting companies suspected by police of being used to launder about £680 million.
The ruling also cancelled all of Flávio’s passports, including his diplomatic passport as a congressman, and ordered him to surrender them within 24 hours.
Flávio’s party acknowledged the election result in a statement issued on Monday night, saying: “We recognise the presidential result proclaimed by the electoral court, but believe that the questions raised need to be properly clarified through a balanced and democratic political debate.”
However, Flávio, like his father after the previous presidential election four years ago, has not conceded defeat to Lula.
The Folha de S Paulo newspaper reported that allies and lawyers had persuaded Flávio to abandon plans to seek the annulment of the election, which he announced on Sunday night. He had argued that a two-hour extension of voting, introduced to allow voters who had struggled to access mandatory free public transport to cast their ballots, had harmed the election. His own campaign had also called for an extension.
According to the newspaper, advisers told him that the legal argument was weak. Flávio has not publicly withdrawn his demand for an annulment and said in his video that he would file a separate case seeking to disqualify Lula’s presidential ticket over alleged abuse of economic power.
The senator faces another investigation concerning what happened to about £20 million he was allegedly recorded asking a disgraced banker accused of corruption to provide for a biographical film about his father.
Flávio’s Senate term is due to end early next year. If he leaves office, he will be without the special legal protections afforded to public officials, having held public office for 24 years.
