Temporary ceasefire begins in Russian occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky to facilitate aid amid humanitarian crisis

Oleshky, Oct 27 (UNI) A temporary ceasefire has begun in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, where residents have been left without food, water and electricity. The truce is expected to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians on Friday.
Ukrainian officials and Russia’s defence ministry said the limited ceasefire was being respected. The White House said the arrangement had been secured by US First Lady Melania Trump. However, neither Moscow, Kyiv nor Washington has disclosed who will monitor the truce or provided details of the planned humanitarian operation.
Kyiv estimates that up to 6,000 people, including 200 children, remain in Oleshky and surrounding areas, with about 1,700 still living in the city itself.
Before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Oleshky had a population of around 24,000. Russian forces captured the city during the opening days of the invasion.
The city has been without electricity, gas and running water for three years, with no shops operating. Delivering supplies has become increasingly difficult, while fleeing the area is also dangerous because escape routes have been mined and are vulnerable to drone attacks.
Located in the partially occupied Kherson region, Oleshky lies across the Dnipro River from the city of Kherson, about 340 miles southeast of Kyiv. The river separates it from Ukrainian positions, while Russian forces control the other side.
The ceasefire comes as Russia continues its advance in Ukraine, with the war entering its fifth year. Kyiv reported fresh Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks on some of the country’s largest cities overnight.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said early Tuesday that Russia had launched as many as 16 ballistic missiles and 280 drones, causing casualties.
“Almost everywhere, Russia’s targets were the energy sector, logistics, and ordinary urban infrastructure,” Zelensky said. “Strikes are taking place every day. Russia is constantly taking new steps towards escalation.”
The developments come ahead of the planned resumption of trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States in November, following a months-long hiatus.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff recently travelled to Europe for separate discussions with Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both sides have indicated an openness to negotiations, although security guarantees remain a key issue.
On Tuesday, Putin also held a telephone conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to discuss diplomatic efforts to end the war.
According to the Norwegian government, the two leaders told Putin that their countries would continue to support Ukraine and stressed the need to resume negotiations.
