Israeli police arrests man carrying knife at event for left-wing leader Yair Golan in suspected stabbing attempt

Tel Aviv, Oct 27 (UNI) Israeli police arrested a man carrying a knife at an event involving left-wing leader Yair Golan, after his party described the incident as a suspected stabbing attempt during the country's crucial election campaign.
The Democrats party said an unidentified man wearing a jacket approached Golan in a threatening manner in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. Golan's security guards intervened, and as they moved towards the man, a large knife reportedly fell from beneath his clothing.
The guards subdued the suspect before he could act and called the police, the party said.
Police confirmed that a suspect had been arrested for possessing a knife but disputed the party's account of an attempted attack.
"Contrary to reports, no attempted stabbing took place," police said.
According to the police statement, officers escorting Golan noticed a suspicious object protruding from beneath the coat of a man standing near the political leader. They detained him for a search and discovered a knife.
The suspect, a Jerusalem resident in his 20s, was arrested and taken for questioning.
"Incitement and violence will not deter us," Golan said after the incident, blaming what he called the "poison machine" run by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"I call on everyone who cares about security and democracy to go out and vote now," he added.
Golan, a former military officer, leads The Democrats, a left-wing party formed from elements of Israel's once-popular Labour Party. He is part of an electoral alliance led by former army chief Gadi Eisenkot, although his political position is further to the left. Golan is the only candidate from a major Israeli party who continues to support a two-state solution with the Palestinians.
The incident followed a dispute between Golan and Israeli authorities over his security arrangements. His party said the protection initially offered to him was inadequate and that the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic intelligence and internal security agency, assumed responsibility for his security on Wednesday after a prolonged legal battle.
"We don't want to imagine how this incident could have ended had it not been for the campaign the party waged that resulted in Shin Bet taking responsibility for Golan's security," The Democrats said in a subsequent statement.
