Panaji, May 3 (UNI) Six people were killed and more than 30 others injured in a stampede during the famous Sri Lairai Jatra pilgrimage in Goa's Shirgaon district on Saturday, police said.
Police and rescue teams reached the spot as soon as the incident was reported. The injured have been admitted to Goa Medical College and North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives in the accident. "Saddened by the loss of lives due to stampede in Goa's Shirgaon. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones, wishing the injured a speedy recovery."
The local administration is assisting the affected people.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has reached the hospital. He has asked for free treatment of the injured. Goa Congress has also expressed grief over the incident.
The incident took place when there was a sudden panic in the huge crowd, due to which people started running to save their lives. Witnesses said people kept falling on each other, resulting in deaths.
Police and emergency services rushed to the spot and relief and rescue operations were immediately started. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
Authorities are yet to officially confirm the reason behind the stampede, but according to initial reports, overcrowding and the lack of proper arrangements led to the chaos.
