Gurugram Traffic Crackdown: 14,859 Challans in one day, Rs 1.40 crore in fines for reckless driving in 23 days

Gurugram, Oct 24 (UNI) A massive traffic enforcement drive in Gurugram has brought to light the alarming scale of traffic violations, with police issuing 14,859 challans in a single day, impounding 176 vehicles without number plates and imposing penalties exceeding Rs 1.40 crore for dangerous driving over a 23-day period.
The figures released by Gurugram Traffic Police on Saturday, reveal the extent of reckless driving and disregard for road safety regulations in one of Haryana's busiest commercial cities, where wrong-side driving, illegal parking and unsafe lane changes continue to pose serious risks to motorists and pedestrians.
In the October 23 crackdown alone, police issued 2,992 challans for illegal parking, 817 for wrong-side driving and 751 for improper lane changes, taking the combined tally for these three violations to 4,560 in just 24 hours.
In a separate enforcement campaign targeting dangerous driving between October 1 and 23, police issued 2,782 challans and imposed fines totalling Rs 1,40,85,000, averaging nearly 121 challans and more than Rs 6.12 lakh in penalties every day.
The action against vehicles without registration number plates was equally significant, with 176 vehicles impounded on October 23. Police said such violations hamper vehicle identification and make enforcement more difficult, particularly when vehicles are involved in traffic offences.
The two enforcement reports underline the scale of the challenge confronting traffic authorities in Gurugram, where high traffic volumes and widespread non-compliance have made road discipline a pressing concern.
Police identified speeding, wrong-side driving, abrupt lane changes and reckless manoeuvres as major contributors to dangerous road conditions.
Wrong-side driving, in particular, exposes motorists to the risk of head-on collisions, while sudden lane changes can trigger accidents involving multiple vehicles. Illegal parking adds to the problem by narrowing carriageways, obstructing traffic and worsening congestion.
Gurugram Traffic Police said the intensified campaign combines on-road enforcement with technology-based surveillance to identify offenders and discourage repeated violations.
The department is also conducting awareness activities aimed at promoting responsible driving practices and ensuring that motorists understand the potentially fatal consequences of traffic violations.
Police have appealed to drivers to observe speed limits, maintain adequate distance between vehicles, follow designated lanes and avoid unsafe overtaking and sudden lane changes.
Motorists have also been directed to park only in authorised areas and ensure that vehicles display valid registration number plates.
