Hariprasad draws up secret list to reclaim Cong-lost seats

Bengaluru, Oct 4 (UNI) In a move that could trigger fresh jockeying among Congress ticket aspirants, KPCC president BK Hariprasad is learnt to have drawn up a constituency-wise list of potential candidates as part of an early strategy to reclaim seats the party lost in the previous Assembly elections.
The exercise, being carried out quietly alongside Hariprasad’s proposed ‘Janata Jodo Yatra’, is aimed at identifying candidates capable of wresting BJP and JD(S)-held constituencies and strengthening the Congress organisation well ahead of the next Assembly polls.
The Congress had swept 136 of the 224 Assembly seats in the previous election and formed the government. Hariprasad, however, is reportedly looking beyond the party’s existing tally and has set his sights on the constituencies where Congress candidates suffered defeat.
Party insiders said the KPCC chief is using the proposed yatra as an opportunity to gather ground-level feedback on the political situation in each constituency. Particular attention is reportedly being paid to constituencies where two or three Congress leaders are already eyeing the party ticket.
The information being collected includes the relative strength of aspirants, their organisational network and their prospects of winning the seat.
The exercise assumes significance as Congress leaders have traditionally faced a dilemma over multiple aspirants in the run-up to elections. Early indications about a preferred candidate often result in others becoming disgruntled or even shifting loyalties.
Hariprasad is therefore learnt to be adopting a different approach by identifying likely winners well in advance and asking them to begin preparations in their respective constituencies.
Other aspirants may subsequently be expected to support the candidate identified by the party, according to the sources.
The strategy also marks an attempt to convert the Janata Jodo Yatra from a conventional mass-contact programme into a political reconnaissance exercise, allowing the party leadership to assess its prospects on the ground while simultaneously strengthening its organisation.
The reported list is particularly significant for Congress aspirants as it could provide an early indication of who the party leadership considers electorally viable in constituencies where it is seeking a comeback.
Hariprasad’s reported calculation is clear — rather than waiting for the election season to identify candidates, start the groundwork now and build winning prospects constituency by constituency.
Whether the exercise ultimately determines the Congress ticket distribution will depend on the party’s electoral strategy closer to the polls, but the early move is already likely to intensify competition among aspirants in the party’s lost constituencies.
