CPI(M) should apologise for communal remarks against Malappuram: Kerala CM

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 4 (UNI) The CPI(M) should apologise to Kerala over its leader P. Nandakumar’s alleged communal remarks against the people of Malappuram, and Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan and the party’s central leadership should clarify their stand, Chief Minister VD Sathesan said on Sunday.
The Chief Minister described Nandakumar’s remarks, in which he allegedly referred to Malappuram as a “den of religious fundamentalists and communalists,” as a direct challenge to Kerala’s secular tradition.
The statement said the remarks were made at a meeting attended by Pinarayi Vijayan and alleged that his failure to condemn or correct the statement gave rise to the impression that he and the CPI(M) shared the position expressed by Nandakumar.
The CM alleged that the remarks were a continuation of the controversial statements made by Pinarayi Vijayan against Malappuram during his tenure as Chief Minister, including comments in an interview with a national daily and subsequent remarks.
It accused the CPI(M) of continuing what it described as a “heinous political policy” of keeping people belonging to a particular religious community in the dark.
The statement said the CPI(M)’s alleged communal campaign had been rejected by the people in elections, but the party had still refused to correct its approach, which it termed condemnable.
It further alleged that the Sangh Parivar and the CPI(M) in Kerala were no different in their approach to communal politics, claiming that both were continuing to demonstrate this through their actions.
The CM demanded that Pinarayi Vijayan publicly clarify his position on Nandakumar’s remarks and that the CPI(M) central leadership tell the people whether it supports the stand taken by its leader.
The CPI(M) and Nandakumar should apologise to Kerala for the alleged communal remarks, he said.
The CM also made it clear that strong action would be taken against anyone who makes communal statements in Kerala, irrespective of political affiliation.
