Harmanpreet Singh’s father hails team effort after India’s historic Asian Games Hockey Gold

Chandigarh, Oct 3 (UNI) Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh’s father, Sarabjit Singh, today hailed the national team’s Asian Games gold medal as a triumph of collective effort, saying the achievement belonged to the entire squad rather than any individual player.
India retained the men’s hockey title with a commanding 5-1 victory over Malaysia in the final in Japan, securing a direct berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Harmanpreet led from the front with two goals, including India’s opening strike from a penalty corner.
The victory completed a historic double for Indian hockey after the women’s team defeated China 1-0 to win gold a day earlier. It was the first time India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams won gold at the same Asian Games.
“It is not the victory of the ‘Sarpanch’ alone, it is the victory of the entire team,” Sarabjit Singh said, referring to Harmanpreet by his popular nickname.
“Hockey is a team game. All the players are like my own children and everyone has contributed to this success,” he said.
Sarabjit, who comes from a farming family near Amritsar, said seeing his son rise from a village background to captain India was a source of immense pride.
“We are ordinary people from a farming family in a village. For us, it is a very big thing that a child from this soil has reached this level and is leading the country,” he said.
He also expressed pride in the Indian women’s team, saying the gold medals won by both sides and their qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics had made the achievement particularly special.
Sarabjit credited his family’s faith for Harmanpreet’s journey.
“We pray to Sri Guru Ram Das Ji every morning and evening to keep his blessings on our son and the entire team. Whatever we have received is because of the Guru’s blessings,” he said.
Despite Harmanpreet’s decisive contribution in the final, Sarabjit repeatedly shifted the focus to the squad.
“I am proud, but this is not one player’s victory. It is the result of teamwork,” he said.
Sarabjit said he had not been able to speak to Harmanpreet immediately after the final. The family and villagers would plan celebrations once his return schedule to Amritsar was confirmed.
