Haryana at 60: Metalled road network surges ten fold to 55,275 km; All villages achieve connectivity

Kamlesh Kali
Panchkula, Oct 28 (UNI) Haryana’s metalled road network has grown more than tenfold in six decades, expanding from 5,100 kilometres in 1966-67 to 55,275 kilometres in 2026-27, while road connectivity has reached every village in the state. The remarkable expansion marks a major milestone in Haryana’s infrastructure development as it prepares to celebrate its 60th Haryana Day on November 1.
The scale of this transformation is evident in the addition of 50,175 kilometres of metalled roads since the state’s formation in 1966.
The number of villages connected by metalled roads has also increased from 1,386 in the early years to 100 per cent coverage, according to the comparative figures.
Haryana began its journey as a separate state with a relatively modest metalled road network of 5,100 kilometres in 1966-67.
By 2026-27, this had expanded to 55,275 kilometres, representing more than a tenfold increase in road infrastructure. The expansion has strengthened links between villages, towns, agricultural markets and industrial centres, making road connectivity a vital part of the state’s economic and social development.
For farmers, better roads facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to mandis, while businesses benefit from improved links between production centres and markets.
The growing network has also enhanced connectivity between rural settlements and urban centres, supporting the movement of people and goods and improving access to essential services.
A key milestone in Haryana’s road infrastructure journey has been the expansion of village connectivity.
From 1,386 villages connected by metalled roads in the state’s early years, the network has grown to cover 100 per cent of villages, according to the comparative data.
This expansion has helped bring rural communities into closer contact with towns and commercial centres. Better road links are particularly important for agricultural households, enabling easier transportation of produce and improving access to markets and public services.
Beyond the expansion of the road network, major highway, expressway and urban transport projects are reshaping connectivity across Haryana and the wider National Capital Region.
The projects highlighted in the supplied report include the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, the Ambala-Kala Amb National Highway, the Rithala-Kundli Metro corridor, and bypass projects around Rewari and Hisar.
These initiatives aim to improve regional transport links, ease congestion, and strengthen connections between residential areas, commercial centres, and industrial hubs.
Together, the expansion of the road network and the development of major transport corridors are enhancing Haryana’s connectivity with neighbouring regions.
The achievement of 100 per cent village connectivity further underlines the reach of this infrastructure expansion.
As the state marks its 60th Haryana Day on November 1, the growth of its road network stands as a defining measure of its infrastructure journey, connecting rural communities with markets, towns and economic centres across Haryana.
