Haryana: Consumer Commission orders HDFC Bank to refund loan processing fee

Kaithal (Haryana), October 15 (UNI) The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Kaithal has directed HDFC Bank to refund a loan processing fee of Rs 8,850 deducted from a lawyer’s account and pay Rs 2,000 as compensation for deficiency in service and unfair trade practice.
The order was passed by the Commission’s presiding member Harisha Mehta and member Ramesh Kumar after hearing a complaint filed by advocate Harpal Duhan on September 17, 2025.
According to the complaint, Duhan had submitted the required documents to obtain a loan, but the bank did not approve his application. He alleged that Rs 8,850 was deducted from his account on September 30, 2024, towards processing charges without a satisfactory explanation.
The bank contended that the processing fee, including applicable taxes, had been disclosed in the loan application. It said Duhan had applied for a loan of Rs 25 lakh and paid Rs 7,500 along with the processing fee of Rs 8,850. The bank further stated that the property did not meet its prescribed standards and the application was closed on November 18, 2024.
After considering the submissions, the Commission held the deduction to be unreasonable and directed the bank to refund the processing fee and pay Rs 2,000 in compensation.
