New solar-powered toilet ends daily inconvenience for girls at Chhattisgarh school

Raipur, Oct 15 (UNI) Girls at a government school in Tarra village no longer have to leave the campus to use a toilet.
The school’s old facility had fallen into disrepair, forcing students to return home during school hours thereby disrupting their routine.
A new solar powered toilet, built at a cost of around ₹7 lakh, has now addressed the problem at the government primary and middle school in Raipur district’s Abhanpur block. The facility will serve 70 girl students and two women teachers, who previously had to use the toilet at the local panchayat building.
The project is Chhattisgarh’s first solar-powered toilet for girls. It has solar panels for lighting, a water supply and an incinerator for sanitary pads. A ramp, support railings and a separate toilet have also been provided for girls with disabilities.
The lack of a usable toilet had made the school day difficult for girls. Students said the inconvenience had sometimes discouraged them from attending classes. With a functional facility now available on campus, they can remain at school without having to interrupt their studies to use a toilet elsewhere.
The project was undertaken under the state government’s Meri Beti-Mera Abhiman campaign, implemented through the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G. Of the total cost, ₹5 lakh came from VB-G RAM G, while Raipur Collector Gaurav Singh sanctioned another ₹2 lakh from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF).
Apart from solar lighting, the facility has a tap and a Sintex water tank to ensure water availability. Paver blocks have been laid around the premises, and plantation and regular cleaning arrangements have been made to maintain hygiene. The sanitary pad incinerator is intended to support menstrual hygiene, while the ramp and support railings make the facility more accessible to girls with disabilities.
Gaurav Singh, Raipur collector said that more sites have been identified for over 350 girls’ toilets across the district under the same campaign. He said the Tarra facility had been designed along the lines of airport toilets, with modern amenities and an emphasis on cleanliness. Similar facilities are planned at the other identified locations, including sanitary pad incinerators.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai launched the Meri Beti-Mera Abhiman campaign to improve safety, dignity and sanitation for girls in rural government schools. The state aims to ensure that every rural government school has a separate toilet for girls by January 26, 2027.
The initiative in Tarra village brings together sanitation, renewable energy and accessible infrastructure in a rural school setting. Through the ‘Meri Beti-Mera Abhiman’ campaign, the state is working to expand access to facilities that support girls’ health, safety and dignity while encouraging regular school attendance and continued education.
