Haryana: Fire breaks out at firecracker stalls in Zirakpur Market

Panchkula, Nov 8 (UNI) A major fire broke out today at temporary stalls selling firecrackers and decorative items in Guru Nanak Enclave Market at Dhakoli in Zirakpur, adjoining Panchkula, triggering panic among shopkeepers and residents as firecrackers stored at the stalls began exploding with loud bangs.
The fire quickly spread across the stalls, sending people running for safety. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, although goods worth lakhs of rupees were gutted in the blaze.
Fire brigade teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information. However, repeated explosions of firecrackers made firefighting operations challenging. Fire personnel worked under difficult conditions and eventually brought the blaze under control, averting a potentially major tragedy.
The incident has raised serious questions over the enforcement of fire safety norms and the alleged mushrooming of unauthorised firecracker sale points in Zirakpur. According to the information available, the Mohali district administration had issued only eight licences for the sale of firecrackers in Zirakpur. However, hundreds of temporary stalls were allegedly operating at different locations in the city.
The incident has also brought the role of the local administration under scrutiny. Questions are being raised over how such a large number of stalls were allowed to operate despite the limited number of authorised licences and whether adequate inspections had been conducted before permitting firecracker sales.
The availability of fire extinguishers, water arrangements, safe storage facilities and emergency access routes at these temporary stalls has also come under question.
While the immediate danger was brought under control without loss of life, the incident has underscored the need for strict enforcement of licensing conditions, fire safety standards and action against unauthorised firecracker outlets to prevent a bigger tragedy during the festive season.
