Haryana: Kaithal police arrest 1 for cyber fraud

Kaithal, Oct 9 (UNI) Continuing its crack down on cybercrimes and cybercriminals, the district police, under the orders of Superintendent of Police Manpreet Singh Sudan, has arrested an accused for allegedly extorting lakhs of rupees through blackmailing via obscene video calls.
A police spokesperson stated that on the night of July 6, a Sector 18 resident received a friend request on Facebook from a girl named " Pinky Sharma". Thinking she was someone he knew, he accepted the request. Shortly afterward, the same girl began chatting with him on Messenger and asked for his WhatsApp number. Shortly after making the call, he suddenly received a video call.
Upon picking up the call, a woman appeared nude on the screen, and started pressuring him to undress. He immediately disconnected the call and out of fear, deleted the chat and number.
Next day, he began receiving threatening messages from various numbers, claiming his "pornographic video" was about to go viral. First, a person claiming to be " YouTube official Sanjay Singh" sent a message, stating that his video had been uploaded to YouTube and that he would have to pay money to stop it.
Shortly after, he received another call — this time, the caller identified himself as a " CBI official " and said he had taken over the file and demanded for a deposit of Rs 51,000 to "stop the video from going viral".
The two so-called "officials" continued to pressure him, and, in a state of fear, he sent Rs 1.26 lakh in several installments to them. When the demand for money steadily increased and the fraudsters demanded another Rs 1 lakh, he realized he had been subjected to a major cyber fraud.
Following which, he registered a case with the Cyber Crime Police Station. The investigation into the case was conducted by a Cyber Crime team who arrested the accused, identified only as Sahil, a resident of Siu village, Bharatpur, Rajasthan.
Accused Sahil had provided the SIM card to the cyber criminals, which was used to create the fake Facebook ID.
He was produced before a local court which remanded him to two days police custody for extensive questioning.
SP Manpreet Singh Sudan appealed to the citizens not to accept video calls from unknown people , not to make online payments due to any threats and to immediately lodge a complaint on number 1930 in any such case. UNI XC SS
