Two Transformer Theft Suspects Held After Shootout in Kurukshetra; One Shot in Leg

Kurukshetra, Oct 9 (UNI) Haryana Police arrested two alleged transformer thieves following a shootout in the Palwal area of Kurukshetra district late Thursday night, with one suspect sustaining a bullet injury in the left leg after police returned fire, officials said on Friday.
The injured accused, identified as Yashpal, was admitted to LNJP Hospital in Kurukshetra for treatment. The second suspect, Indal, was arrested at the spot, police said.
Inspector Prateek, in-charge of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA-1), said the team was searching for suspects linked to transformer thefts reported in the jurisdictions of Jhansa, Kurukshetra University and Thanesar City police stations when it received a tip-off on October 8.
According to police, the suspects were allegedly near a tubewell on the road from Palwal to Jhirbari, where they had gone with tools to remove copper wiring and iron strips from an electricity transformer. The information also indicated that they were carrying illegal firearms and ammunition.
The CIA-1 team approached the location on foot and spotted two men near the tubewell. Police said the suspects tried to flee after seeing the team, and one of them opened fire at the personnel. Despite being warned to surrender, he allegedly fired a second time. Police said the team fired in self-defence to prevent further attacks and apprehend the suspects. One bullet struck Yashpal in the left leg, after which he fell to the ground and his weapon dropped. The other suspect was caught while attempting to escape.
Police identified Yashpal as a resident of Paharganj in central Delhi, currently living on Kawadi Road in Arjun Nagar, Panipat. Indal, originally from Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh, was also living in the same locality in Panipat. Investigators said both suspects were allegedly involved in multiple transformer thefts in Kurukshetra district and had previous cases registered against them. Further investigation is underway.
