Haryana: UHBVN urges employees to call off three-day strike, warns of hardship to consumers

Panchkula, Oct 21 (UNI) The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has appealed to power employees to reconsider their proposed three-day statewide strike beginning October 22, cautioning that any disruption in electricity supply could severely inconvenience households and affect agricultural operations, industrial production, businesses, hospitals and other essential services.
In an appeal issued ahead of the proposed agitation, the power distribution utility stressed that electricity was the backbone of daily life and economic activity, and urged employees to place public interest above industrial action.
The appeal comes amid mounting opposition to the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission's (HERC) decision to grant a 25-year parallel electricity distribution licence to Eleven Power Private Limited for Gurugram and Nuh districts.
Power employees and engineers have announced a statewide strike from October 22 to 24 in protest of the decision.
UHBVN said employees were an integral part of the state's electricity infrastructure and their services were directly connected with the daily lives of millions of consumers.
"Public interest and public convenience are paramount," the appeal stated.
Acknowledging the contribution of power employees, the utility said workers performed their duties in extreme weather conditions, during emergencies and at all hours to maintain uninterrupted electricity supply. It urged employees to uphold their commitment to public service and avoid circumstances that could cause unnecessary inconvenience to consumers.
The utility also recognised employees' right to raise their demands and grievances, while stressing that differences between employees and the administration should be resolved through constructive dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding.
"Solutions are possible through dialogue," the appeal said, adding that lasting solutions to disputes could be achieved through discussions and consensus rather than strikes.
UHBVN maintained that the interests of electricity consumers and employees were interconnected and that cooperation was essential to maintaining an efficient and reliable power distribution system.
It further said the Haryana government was committed to the state's development, public welfare, and the improvement of essential services, and that employees' participation and cooperation were crucial to achieving these objectives.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured power employees that the state government will challenge HERC's decision before the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL).
The employees' organisations, however, have remained firm on their proposed strike despite the government's assurances.
