Himachal ranks second in literacy across India, says Shanta Kumar

Palampur, Sep 18 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar on Friday said it was a matter of great pride and happiness that Himachal Pradesh had secured the second position in the country in literacy.
He said Himachal Pradesh's literacy rate had reached 99.55 per cent, with Goa topping the country at 99.7 per cent, while Himachal Pradesh had secured the second position.
Kumar said Himachal Pradesh was honoured at a programme in Delhi for its achievement and congratulated the state government and people for the feat.
He said Himachal Pradesh faced several geographical challenges as it was a hilly and border state. In many areas, roads were unavailable and people had to travel on foot, while difficult and remote border regions such as Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur posed additional challenges.
Despite these difficulties, Himachal Pradesh had left behind all other states in the country except Goa in literacy, he said, describing the achievement as a matter of great pride for the state.
Kumar urged the state government to work towards achieving 100 per cent literacy at the earliest and strive to surpass Goa to secure the top position in the country.
