Panchkula Police arrest man in alleged ₹1.07-crore property fraud

Panchkula, Sep 18 (UNI) Panchkula Police have arrested a man for allegedly cheating a prospective homebuyer of ₹1.07 crore by concealing an earlier agreement to sell the same Sector 26 property and a related court dispute, a police spokesperson said on Friday.
The accused, Kapil Chawla, was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing-1 on September 17 and produced before a court on Friday, which remanded him in police custody for two days.
According to police, the complainant had entered into an agreement with Ram Prakash Chawla on December 18, 2025, to purchase a house in Sector 26 for ₹5.25 crore. The complainant allegedly paid ₹1 crore through banking transactions and another ₹7 lakh in cash as part of the deal.
Police said the complainant was allegedly assured that the property was free from disputes and competing claims and that no previous agreement to sell it had been executed.
The complainant, however, subsequently learnt that an agreement concerning the same property had allegedly been executed with Mukesh Kumar Goyal on January 5, 2024, and a related dispute was pending before a court.
Tajinder Pal Singh, in-charge of Economic Offences Wing-1, said the investigation also found that the accused side had earlier got a case registered against Goyal at Sector 14 Police Station.
Investigators examined the property documents, the complainant's statements and other records connected with the transactions.
Police said the investigation focused on allegations that ₹1.07 crore was obtained from the complainant by concealing material facts about the property.
DCP Panchkula Aditi Singh said police had also received complaints in the past concerning financial transactions and alleged fraud against the accused.
During the two-day remand, investigators will examine the alleged financial transactions and trace the money and property linked to the case, police said.
Police will also investigate the role of Ram Prakash Chawla, the accused's father, and further legal action, including arrest if warranted by the investigation, will be taken, Singh said.
